A couple of years ago, Michael Ironside took some time out to speak to XBOX.com at the E3 exibition. He was very forthright and honest in his responses and provided some valuable insight into the show, game and his view of acting. " I'm not a big fan of television" said Mr Ironside "I've had a hard time over the years because I think the quality of the writing sort of starts to deteriorate". He believed that , although the original intention was to produce TV shows with integrity and creativity " when you create a character everyone loves, you never get someone to let you do anything to them. It's a marginal business at best, and once you get something that works they want you to protect it and keep it. And in doing that, I think it starts to degenerate." Mr Ironside had some very radical views on lead characters. " You have to be willing to kill a character, you have to be willing to take those risks". Mr Ironside's views date back to his student days. "When I was in art college" he continued, "I would be painting, and I would create something on a canvas that was actually quite attractive. But if I got frightened and tried to protect that, that canvas would die. You have to attack the whole canvas with that same energy, and that's what we're going to do with the show". Michael Ironside gave some hints as to his involvement with the show. "I'm very heavily into the storyline and show-running. My M.O. over the years is that I make things better, where people give me that freedom. I'm a director's actor; I'm a storyteller's actor. I believe in making something deeper, richer, and more real. Mr Ironside revealed why he turned down the role of Captain Trager in a feature film 1991 and pilot in 2001. He was asked "Would you do it as a TV show?" And they hadn't changed the writing. It was really kind of dumb, pontification of actors, not organically based. The idea was good, but the way they ran with the idea was very, very â?¦hygienic." It was at this time that Spaceworks became involved. "Then Dan D'or, who's in Canada, got involved with the same companyâ??it's a German companyâ??to do another deal with them, saw Ice Planet on their website, asked if he could look at it,." "He looked at it, heard I'd been approached on it, called me, and said, "Would you get involved?" I said I would, if this, this, and this happened. I never thought I'd hear anything back from him. He went off and obtained the rights, all the CGI, everything involved with the show, and said, "What do you want?" I said character death has to be dealt with. We have to deal with characters' defects and their problems." The rest, as they say, is history.
